"Southern Exposure {The Wagging Tales}"
By: Sandy d'Shore

Patricia Robinson Nelson is a self described therapist, animal nutritionist, groomer, veterinary advisor, counselor, and on many occasions, pet matchmaker. She is known most often as "Patsy" and has been the owner of Wagging Tale for 21 years.

When you come through the door of the Wagging Tale, you're likely to be met by a friendly cat or pup hoping for a new home. Patsy sometimes brings her own dogs to work and also breeds and sells parakeets and cockatiels. Within the atmosphere of this delightful menagerie, the store offers a great selection of pet supplies and products, dog grooming and free expert advice. Occasionally, animals are boarded there too. "I'm one of those people that has a hard time saying no," she smiles. "We take in homeless kitties when we have the space-I believe every cat should be able to sit on someone's lap and watch TV."

Nelson started out teaching with Special Services but decided that opening a pet store was a dream she wanted to make happen. "Though I think, it was the scariest thing I ever did," she adds. She said she owes a lot of her success to the financial support and encouragement of her father and a current staff she can depend on.... Along with working "hands on" in the store, Patsy is also a regular contributor to Jersey Paw Prints – a newspaper for pet lovers. It is likely she is also responsible for facilitating about two thousand animal adoptions ... she is known as the "matchmaker" of Cape May County "and is rumored to have a heart of gold."

When asked what other accomplishments are important to her she says that teaching people how to take better care of animals is foremost. Patsy is a strong proponent of spaying and neutering, pointing out how many unwanted cats and dogs are euthanized each year. Some of her suggestions include adopting two cats together rather than one (they keep each other company); not adopting animals when they are too young (just because animals have stopped nursing doesn't mean they are ready to leave their mother); making sure you take a good look at your lifestyle to help decide which is the best pet for you (and for the pet).
